Does Missed Call Text Back Actually Work?
We Analyzed 14,354 Missed Calls Across 192 Home Service Businesses
You've invested in local SEO, Google Ads, Local Services Ads, and your Google Business Profile to make the phone ring. But what happens when you can't answer?
For many contractors, that missed call becomes a lost opportunity. A technician is on a roof, a plumber is under a sink, or the office has already closed for the day. The customer hears voicemail, hangs up, and calls the next business on Google.
Missed call text back was designed to prevent that from happening. If your business misses a call, an automated text message is immediately sent to the customer, giving them another way to start a conversation.
But does it actually work?

To answer that question, we analyzed every missed call text back sent through the 99 Calls platform during the first seven months of 2026. The study included 14,354 automated text messages sent on behalf of 192 home service businesses across the United States and Canada. We measured reply rates, response times, after-hours performance, and whether those conversations became billable leads. The findings have never been published before.
Here's what we found:
-
One out of every three missed callers replied.
-
Nearly three quarters replied within five minutes.
-
Nine out of ten recovered conversations happened entirely by text.
-
More than 1,600 reply conversations became billable leads.
The takeaway is simple. A missed phone call doesn't have to become a lost customer. With an immediate text response, many homeowners are willing to continue the conversation, even if nobody answered the phone.
About this research
This study analyzed 14,354 missed call text messages sent between January and July 2026 on behalf of 192 home service businesses. We measured customer reply rates, response times, after-hours performance, and whether conversations became billable leads. The data only includes situations where an automated text message was actually sent after a missed call. Calls answered by a live receptionist or answering service were excluded.
Why Contractors Lose Good Leads Every Day
It's 7:15 on a Wednesday evening.
An HVAC technician is finishing one last repair before heading home when a homeowner's air conditioner suddenly stops working. They search Google for an HVAC contractor and call the first company they find.
The phone rings a few times before going to voicemail.
Rather than leaving a message, the homeowner hangs up and calls another contractor. Within minutes, someone answers and schedules the appointment.
The first contractor never even knew they lost the job.
This happens every day across nearly every home service industry. Whether you're a plumber, roofer, electrician, painter, or restoration contractor, you can't answer every phone call while working in the field.
The problem is that today's homeowners rarely wait for a callback. When they need service, they often contact several businesses until someone responds.
That's why speed to lead has become one of the biggest factors in winning new customers.
Every missed call represents marketing dollars you've already spent. Whether that customer found you through your website, Google Business Profile, Google Ads, or Local Services Ads, you've already done the hard part by getting them to call.
Missed call text back helps protect that investment by giving customers another way to reach your business before they hire someone else.
Key Findings: Missed Call Text Back Conversion Rates & Data
One Out of Every Three Missed Callers Replied
Across 14,354 missed call text messages, customers replied 4,698 times, resulting in an overall reply rate of 32.7%. In other words, nearly one out of every three missed callers continued the conversation instead of moving on.
Even more impressive, those replies came from 4,257 unique customers, representing thousands of homeowners who may otherwise have been lost after hearing voicemail.
The results were also remarkably consistent. Throughout the seven-month study, monthly reply rates ranged from 31.3% to 34.9%, even as adoption grew from 131 businesses in January to 192 businesses in July. That consistency suggests these weren't isolated results. Contractors across a wide range of home service industries experienced similar success.
Most Customers Replied Within Five Minutes
One of the most surprising findings wasn't just how many customers replied. It was how quickly they replied.

-
74% responded within five minutes
-
92% responded within one hour
-
99% responded within 24 hours
These numbers reinforce the importance of speed to lead.
When homeowners receive an immediate text message, they're often still holding their phone and actively looking for help. Responding within seconds keeps your business in the conversation before the customer moves on to another contractor.
Most Conversations Stayed Entirely Over Text
Many contractors assume customers will call back after receiving a text.
The data tells a different story.
Of the 4,698 customers who replied, only 476 also completed a phone call with the business during the following 24 hours. That means roughly nine out of ten recovered conversations happened entirely over text.
Without the automated text message, many of those customers may never have reconnected with the contractor at all.
For busy homeowners, texting is often faster and more convenient than leaving a voicemail or waiting for a callback.
It Worked Just As Well After Hours
Many contractors assume missed call text back is most valuable during business hours.
Our data suggests otherwise.
Nearly one quarter of all automated text messages were sent during evenings and weekends, times when many offices are closed and callbacks aren't always possible. Those after-hours text messages generated a 34.2% reply rate, nearly identical to daytime performance, recovering 1,186 customer conversations during the seven-month study.
For contractors without a 24-hour office staff, this may be one of the biggest advantages of missed call text back. Even when nobody is available to answer the phone, customers still receive an immediate response and have a way to start the conversation.
Why Missed Call Text Back Works for Home Service Contractors
At first glance, recovering one out of every three missed callers sounds almost too good to be true. But when you consider how people communicate today, it makes perfect sense.
Most homeowners don't enjoy leaving voicemails. It's faster and easier to send a quick text explaining the problem.
An automated text message also provides immediate reassurance. Even if nobody answered the phone, the customer knows their inquiry was received and that someone will respond.
That quick acknowledgment can make the difference between keeping the conversation alive and losing the lead to a competitor.
Missed call text back is particularly effective for service businesses because many calls happen when contractors simply can't answer the phone.
Common situations include:
-
Working on a customer's property.
-
Driving between appointments.
-
Meeting with another client.
-
Responding to an emergency service call.
-
Evenings, weekends, and holidays.
In these situations, an automated text keeps the conversation moving until someone is available to respond personally.
The technology doesn't replace excellent customer service. Instead, it helps ensure potential customers don't disappear before you have the opportunity to provide it.
Best Practices for Missed Call Text Back for Automated Missed Call Texting
Like any customer communication tool, the results depend on how you use it. Based on the findings from this study, here are several best practices that can help maximize your success.
Send the Text Immediately
Timing matters.
With 74% of replies arriving within five minutes, customers are most likely to respond while they're still actively searching for help. Waiting even a few minutes reduces the chances of reconnecting.
Keep the Message Short and Friendly
Simple messages perform best.
Something as straightforward as:
Sorry we missed your call. How can we help?
feels conversational and makes it easy for customers to reply.
Avoid long, formal messages that sound automated or promotional.
Reply Quickly After the Customer Responds
The automated text starts the conversation.
A real person should continue it.
If a homeowner replies asking for an estimate or describing an emergency, responding quickly helps maintain momentum and builds confidence that your business is responsive.
Don't Ignore After-Hours Calls
Many contractors assume they can simply return missed calls the next morning.
Our research suggests otherwise.
Nearly one quarter of all text-backs in the study were sent after hours, and those messages generated a 34.2% reply rate, almost identical to daytime performance.
For businesses without evening office staff, missed call text back can help keep leads engaged until someone is available.
Protect the Marketing Investment You've Already Made
Whether you're investing in Google Ads management, Local Services Ads, Google Business Profile management, or local SEO for contractors, every missed phone call represents a lead you've already paid to generate.
Missed call text back doesn't create new demand. It helps you capture more of the demand you've already earned.
The Bottom Line
Every day, contractors spend thousands of dollars generating phone calls through SEO, Google Ads, Local Services Ads, referrals, and other marketing channels.
But if nobody answers the phone, those marketing dollars can quickly go to waste.
Our analysis of 14,354 missed call text messages across 192 home service businesses found that one out of every three missed callers replied, most replied within five minutes, and roughly nine out of ten recovered conversations happened entirely over text. More importantly, 1,619 of those conversations became billable leads, demonstrating that these weren't just casual replies. They were real business opportunities.
No contractor can answer every phone call.
But every contractor can give customers another way to connect.
Sometimes, a simple text message is all it takes to turn a missed call into your next customer.
