Is Google Quietly Tightening LSA Verification?
If you’ve been running Local Services Ads (LSA) for a while, you already know the drill: background checks, licenses, insurance… jump through the hoops and get verified.
But something interesting is happening. It looks like Google may be testing a shift in how verification is presented, and possibly how it actually works. Below outlines what we found.
What’s changing?
Instead of a single “background check,” we’re now seeing it broken into:

- Business representative check

- Identity verification

- Business registration (new step)
Requiring DUNS, business name, and address

This isn’t coming out of nowhere.
Google has already been moving toward stricter verification across LSAs; adding identity checks, business-level validation, and more layered screening to reduce spam and impersonation.
Why this matters
This is Google doubling down on trust signals.
Instead of one vague “background check,” they’re separating:
- Who you are (identity verification)
- Your role in the business (rep check)
- Whether the business itself is legit (registration)
It turns verification from a checkbox into a system.
What this likely means for contractors
If this rolls out fully, expect:
- Possible longer approval times (already 2–5+ weeks in many cases)
- More document matching issues (name, address, entity mismatches)
- Fewer spammy competitors slipping through
But here’s the upside:
Less competition = cheaper leads + better lead quality
Google has been steadily cleaning up LSAs to protect users from fake businesses and impersonators. If you’re legit, you can prove it, and that’s good news.
The bigger picture
This lines up with everything Google has been doing lately:
- Replacing multiple badges with one “Google Verified” signal
- Making verification ongoing, not one-and-done
- Prioritizing trust over volume
In other words:
LSAs are becoming less about who signs up, and more about who actually deserves to show up.
Final thought
If you’re already verified and consistent with your business info, you’ll probably be fine.
If your docs don’t match, or you’ve been skating by, and this is where things start breaking.
