Cold-Weather Service Demand Surges in October: What 99 Calls Lead Data Shows
Cool, fall-like weather showed up early this year. Recent cold fronts have pushed temperatures 10 to 15 degrees below normal across parts of the Midwest and Northeast. For homeowners, that first chilly morning is when they flip on the furnace, notice the draft by the back door, and remember they never had the chimney swept last year.
For service businesses that handle cold-weather work, that moment is the starting gun. We looked at a full year of lead activity across 99 Calls client websites (September 2025 through August 2026) to see exactly when homeowners start asking for heating, chimney, snow, and frozen pipe help. The pattern is clear: the demand arrives in October, not December, and the businesses that are already visible when it hits get the calls.
What the weather is telling us
- Northeast and Midwest: September cold fronts delivered an early taste of crisp autumn air. Temperatures are expected to swing back toward seasonal averages before real winter cold sets in.
- National trends: The Old Farmer's Almanac calls for September and October to trend cooler and wetter than normal in parts of the East and Northeast, while the interior of the country runs warmer than average (Old Farmer's Almanac).
- Winter outlook: NOAA's Climate Prediction Center and extended forecasts favor above-normal temperatures for much of the country into late autumn and early winter, so these early chills may give way to a milder winter overall in many regions (Men's Journal, CNN).
Put those together and here is the takeaway for business owners: the first cold snaps of fall are when homeowners act. If the deep freeze turns out milder than usual, the early season becomes an even bigger share of the year's cold-weather work. Waiting for the first snowstorm to start marketing means showing up after the rush.
What our client data shows
Across 99 Calls client sites, we tracked lead requests that mention specific cold-weather needs, along with total leads for heating and related trades. Data was pulled from Google Ads, LSA, and organic results. Here is what a year of real homeowner requests looked like.
Chimney and fireplace requests double in October
Requests mentioning a chimney, fireplace, or flue came in to 149 different client businesses over the year. They nearly doubled from September (122) to October (240), and October was six times busier than July. Just four months, September through December, accounted for 57% of the entire year's chimney and fireplace requests.

Heating requests jump the moment it gets cold
Lead requests mentioning a furnace, heater, heat pump, boiler, or "no heat" went from 49 in September to 96 in October, nearly double, and stayed elevated through February. HVAC contractors on our platform saw the same thing in total leads: they averaged about 177 leads a month from October through January, more than double August's 80. August is the quiet before the storm, which is exactly why September is the time to build momentum.

Duct and vent cleaning followed the same curve. Leads for that trade went from 16 in August to 107 in October, the busiest month of the year.
Snow, ice, and frozen pipes hit hard, but later
- Snow and ice: Requests mentioning snow, plowing, or ice dams were heavily concentrated in winter. 72% came in December through February, with January (153) running more than 12 times higher than August (12).
- Frozen and burst pipes: 45% of the year's frozen or burst pipe requests landed in just January and February. Plumbing contractors overall saw leads rise 36% in January and February compared to November and December.
- Roofing: February was the busiest month of the year for roofing leads on our platform (703), nearly double December (359), as winter weather exposed damage.

Snow removal and frozen pipe work peak later, but the businesses that win those calls in January are the ones that have been building visibility, reviews, and search presence since the fall. You can't turn on a reputation overnight when the first storm hits.
Why now is the time to invest
The data and the forecasts point to the same answer: the time to put more marketing dollars into cold-weather services is right now, before the rush, not in the middle of it.
- Demand shows up early. Chimney and heating requests nearly double from September to October. If your ads, service pages, and Google Business Profile aren't ready by then, you miss the first and often biggest wave.
- A milder winter makes fall matter more. If forecasts for above-normal temperatures hold, there may be fewer big deep-freeze spikes later. That puts more weight on the early-season tune-ups, sweeps and inspections homeowners book when the first cold front arrives.
- Visibility takes time to build. Search rankings, reviews and ad performance improve over weeks, not days. Starting in September means you're at full strength when January's snow and frozen pipe calls come in.
- Wetter weather in the East adds work. A cooler, wetter fall in the Northeast means more gutter, roof, and water damage calls on top of heating and chimney work.
Where to focus your budget
- Heating and HVAC: Promote furnace tune-ups, heat pump service, and "no heat" emergency repair now. Consider a fall maintenance special to capture homeowners who are thinking about it for the first time this season.
- Chimney and fireplace: October and November are your peak. Push chimney sweeps, inspections, and fireplace repair ads now, and ask happy customers for reviews while jobs are fresh.
- Snow removal: Line up seasonal contracts in the fall. Homeowners and property managers who book early are locked in before the first storm.
- Plumbing: Start messaging about pipe winterization and insulation now, then be ready for frozen and burst pipe emergency calls in January and February.
- Insulation, duct cleaning and weatherproofing: These services fit naturally with the first cold snap, when homeowners notice drafts and higher heating bills.
Get ahead of the cold
The first cold front already came through. Homeowners are paying attention, and the busiest weeks for chimney and heating work are just ahead. If you offer cold-weather services, now is the time to increase your investment so your business is the one they find first.
